Water Safety and Drowning Prevention

MAC aquatics staff give back by volunteering on many committees and boards that promote water safety education, such as Oregon Recreation and Parks Association (ORPA), Portland Area Aquatics Council (PAAC) and Association of Aquatics Professionals (AOAP). Lisa Virtue, Assistant Athletic Director, is on the AOAP's Drowning Prevention Committee, leading the U.S. in a drowning prevention initiative to educate parents, pool operators and children on water safety. MAC hosts an annual water safety event for members and guests each year during the National Water Safety Month of May.

MAC's Swim School is a partner of the USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash initiative, which is a national child-focused water safety campaign. The aim is to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim.
